Chapter 19

Ten Piedad {then}

Elvis was starting his chorus on the CD player as I dropped the food and rushed into the living area to find her lying on the carpet. She was curled up on her left side almost like she decided to take a nap on the floor in front of the TV. I called out for her as I fell to my knees in shock.

I reached forward with trembling hands to softly roll her over and feel for a pulse. Nothing. Her eyes were open and staring off in the distance like she was watching in the dark for the sun to rise on a brand new day.

Her stomach was covered in blood from what must have been multiple stab wounds. My rational mind knew it was too late but I blew a breath into her mouth and started CPR compressions. Yelling, screaming, I called for her to respond but I knew it was too late.

I tore at my pockets to grab my phone and just faintly noticed my hands were covered in her blood. As I cursed and dialed 911 my mind slowly unhinged and the colors of my vision went red with anger.

“911, what is your emergency?” the operator said with a scripted tone. I quickly yelled out my address and that I needed an ambulance for my mother who had received multiple stab wounds and had no pulse. I could feel tears running down my face as I looked at her and barked at the operator.

“The ambulance is in route sir. You said your mother was stabbed. Who stabbed her? Is the person who stabbed her still in the house?” the operator enquired with a hint of concern.

My mind whirled and locked in on the man I passed on the way to my door. He was shoving something into his pocket when I almost ran into him. I looked at the cold body of my mom and noticed that her gold heart necklace was no longer there. I called out not even considering that I still had the phone glued to the side of my face, “I saw him. He’s mine.” With that I dropped the phone and ran out my front door.

I dashed around the side of the building as quickly as I could move in my socks. I moved up past the hedge that the man had disappeared behind a few short minutes ago. Scanning, looking for the man I had bumped into, I got a glimpse of his silhouette darting between two other town houses on the other side of the community pool.

Without thought of weapon or calling for help, I sprinted in a mad dash toward his location. This man, who I knew in the bottom of my soul was the person that had stabbed my mother to death, did not notice me until I was halfway across the rec area. He was about ready to go around the corner of a stairwell when he saw me moving at full speed toward his location.
